„Service Above Self”
It is worth mentioning that Odorheiu Secuiesc was not among the cities where Rotary clubs and the Rotarian movement were formed at the beginning of the twentieth century. It was only in October 1997 that our friend, Gábor Kolumbán, former president of Harghita County Council, brought us the news that he had received the invitation to establish a Rotary club. He decided to found the club in his hometown, Odorheiu Secuiesc.
As representatives of various fields, we gathered to familiarize ourselves with the concept of Rotary and to establish a group of friends. We met weekly, every Wednesday, at Pension Béluci, where we enriched our theoretical knowledge and gradually prepared for the establishment of Rotary Club Odorheiu Secuiesc.
We thought the establishment of the club would be a significant achievement for our city. In the meantime, on several occasions, our team was visited by Jörg Tschopp, Governor of Rotary International’s European District, and Erich Gerber, Special Representative, who were informed about our team’s preparations.
In 1998, the representatives of Rotary International considered that the time had come to establish the club. Thus, on May 16th we organized our first general meeting, where the 28 founding members voted in favor of establishing Rotary Club Odorheiu Secuiesc, elected club officials and unanimously requested the admission of Rotary Club Odorheiu Secuiesc to Rotary International.
The charter celebration took place on May 23, 1998, when Rotary International officially recognized and accepted Rotary Club Odorheiu Secuiesc as a member.
At the beginning of the ceremony, founding president Árpád Balla greeted representatives of Rotary International: district governor Jörg Tschopp, special representative Erich Gerber, president of Rotary Club Zürich-Limmattal, Richard Waelti, president of Rotary Club Meilen, and guest Swiss Rotarians. He also greeted representatives of Rotary clubs in Romania, vice-president of the “godfather” club in Brasov, Pál Liszka, as well as representatives of clubs in Ploiesti and Bistrita.
The president briefly introduced the history of Rotary International, followed by greetings by Jörg Tschopp and Erich Gerber. Then the president introduced the founding members of the club from Odorheiu Secuiesc, to whom the district governor handed the badge of the organization. This was followed by the congratulations of Liszka Pál, who handed over the club’s flag, the exchange of flags of the guest clubs and the club of Odorheiu Secuiesc, as well as the handing over of gifts. RC Meilen’s gift was a Rotary bell, and RC Zürich-Limmattal offered the founding members to pay the membership fee to Rotary International for two years.
Finally, Jörg Tschopp presented and handed over the charter, proof of becoming a member of the world organization. The ceremony ended with a concert by students of the Dr. Palló Imre School of Arts, followed by a cocktail party.

Szerdai napon 19:00 órakor találkoztunk a Haáz Rezső múzeum képtárában ahová az igazgató jóvoltából bebocsájtást nyertünk.
Első adminisztratív tevékenységünk volt a klub bejegyeztetése a Megyei Törvényszéken. Az első év célkitűzése volt a klub élet megtanulása, megalapozása, egymás megismerése, a baráti kötetlen légkör kialakítása, a felmerült kérdések szabad kötetlen megvitatása.
A célzott programok közül megemlítjük a management előadás sorozatot, holland előadóval, az Udvarhely színészeivel való találkozót, Elekes Gyula bemutatót tartott a tűzzománc művészetről, találkozót szerveztünk az udvarhelyi alapítványok elnökeivel, a Dr. Palló Imre Szakközépiskolában zeneaudiciókon vettünk részt, ahol a diákok tiszteletünkre egy koncertet is adtak, a Rotary családokkal közösen megszer-veztük Karácsony megünneplését, szabad vitát rendeztünk egy mamográf beszerzéséről és egyebekről is tárgyaltunk.
Matching grant pályázatok támogatása:
A médiával való kapcsolatunk megfelelő volt, szerepeltünk az udvarhelyi TV-ben, az Udvarhelyi Híradó tevékenységünkről közölt tudósításokat.
Bekapcsolódtunk az országos Rotary tevékenységbe, képviseltettük magunkat a besztercei és a segesvári klubok avatásán, valamint a romániai Rotary mozgalom 70. éves jubileumi ünnepségén Bukarestben.
Ebben az időben a külföldi Rotary Clubokkal csak levelezői kapcsolatunk volt. 1999 tavaszán volt egy Rotary Kormányzói látogatás, ez alkalommal tevékenységünket pozitívan értékelték.
